Each summer for the past seven years, I have attended a Bible camp called Camp Gilead in Carnation, WA. This camp is very special to me. It has transformed my life and has strengthened my relationship with God in so many ways. This past summer I had the opportunity to work on staff for the first time as an Assistant Cook. I was extremely nervous and had no idea what to expect. That all went away right when I got out of my car on my first day.
Working in the kitchen for three meals a day doesn’t seem like a lot of fun, but trust me it is a blast! Not only do you get the opportunity to interact with campers as they come through the serving line, but you get to serve God at one of the greatest places imaginable! The staff you work with quickly become your brothers and sisters in Christ. There is never a dull moment when working with them. I have made some very close friends, being on staff, that I plan on keeping in contact with for the rest of my life.
Camp Gilead has a uniqueness about it that is unexplainable. After one summer of camp, you keep wanting to come back. Then as you become a regular camper or on staff for so many summers, it’s hard to see yourself anywhere else. Camp is basically the place where you don’t have to feel afraid to express your faith with the people around you. That in itself is such a blessing.
I am extremely excited to start my second summer on staff at Camp Gilead this year. Once again, I will be an Assistant Cook! Having the opportunity to work at such a special place such as Camp Gilead is something you can’t take for granted. When people like myself try and explain what camp means to them, it is such a hard question to answer. There is so much I have taken away from Camp Gilead as a past camper and now staff member. They are experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life. I am looking forward to what the Lord has in store for me this summer, and the next chapter of memories to be made.
